Louis Auchincloss, editor of this volume, is the author of more than fifty works of fiction, literary criticism, biography, and history, and like Wharton before him holds the distinction of being his generationýs foremost chronicler of New York society. He has edited two volumes of the writings of Theodore Roosevelt for The Library of America and his most recent novel, East Side Story, was published in 2004.
