John Updike is a novelist, short-story writer, poet, and critic. He has published more than 50 books, including the four novels centered on the character "Rabbit" Angstrom, Couples (1968), The Witches of Eastwick (1984), In the Beauty of the Lilies (1996), and, most recently, Seek My Face (2002). He has twice won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, once for criticism.
